Safeguarding at The Gordon Children’s Academy

At The Gordon Children’s Academy, safeguarding is our highest priority. The safety, welfare, and wellbeing of every pupil are at the heart of everything we do. We are committed to creating a nurturing environment where children feel safe, supported, and empowered to thrive.

All staff receive regular safeguarding training to ensure they are confident and equipped to protect children from harm. From the moment a child joins us, beginning with a home visit in Reception, we build strong, trusting relationships with families. These connections allow for open and honest conversations, ensuring we work together to support every child.

We offer a wide range of support tailored to individual needs, including:

  • One-to-one sessions to help pupils overcome personal challenges
  • Small group interventions, such as in Inclusion Hub, to build social skills, confidence, and resilience
  • An ‘open door’ policy so pupils can share worries at any time
  • Individual ELSA (Emotional Literacy Support Assistant) sessions

Our safeguarding approach extends beyond the school gates. We aim to keep children safe at home, online, and in the wider community. Every staff member shares responsibility for promoting safety and wellbeing. If a child discloses abuse, we have a legal duty to act. While we aim to involve parents, there are times when external agencies advise otherwise. In all cases, we support families with compassion and care.

Meet Our Safeguarding Team

Safeguarding is everybody's responsibility and therefore all staff have regular, high quality training.

Our Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL) is Mrs Legg, who leads all safeguarding and child protection efforts. She works closely with pupils and families, offering personalised support and running termly assemblies on safeguarding and digital safety.

Our Deputy DSLs include:

  • Mrs Youseman – Head Teacher
  • Miss Martin – Deputy Head Teacher
  • Miss A Bassett – Assistant Headteacher
  • Miss B Langiano – SENCO and Assistant Head
  • Mrs S Lawrence – Attendance Improvement Coordinator

For more details, please refer to our Safeguarding Policy.

Digital Safety

We teach pupils how to stay safe online - this is threaded throughout our curriculum. Alongside this, we have regular lessons within computing about the importance of cyber safety, alongside termly assemblies focusing on keeping children safe online. We encourage families to reinforce these habits at home:

  • Avoid clicking on unknown links or pop-ups
  • Report anything upsetting or suspicious to a trusted adult
  • Never share personal information online
  • Be respectful in digital communication—every action leaves a footprint
