As part of the Thinking Schools Academy Trust, we take pride in the unique approach we take to education: we provide our children with the skills and tools they need to think in a variety of ways and become lifelong learners. The transferrable Thinking Tools that we teach our pupils are designed to prepare them for the range of scenarios, dilemmas and circumstances that they may face in later life as part of modern society.
The University of Exeter’s School of Education – which leads the way in research on Metacognition, Thinking Skills and Creativity – provides a framework for schools to become recognised Thinking Schools. We received our initial accreditation in 2018. The University has recently assessed evidence of our school’s teaching and learning practices, the quality of our curriculum and the impact it has on our pupils, and, as a result, rewarded us our reaccreditation.
At The Gordon Children’s Academy, we are proud of the support and opportunities we provide our pupils. We cultivate a nurturing, supportive environment which encourages our children to be their best selves and work to achieve their best. We were thrilled that the University of Exeter recognised these efforts in their report, stating that the Academy “conveys a positive, caring and creative atmosphere” and that “achievement continues to rise across the school with attendance and behaviour being of an excellent standard.”
“We are delighted to have been re-accredited as a Thinking School by the University of Exeter. I am incredibly proud to be the Headteacher of The Gordon Children’s Academy, and to see the provision which we work so hard to deliver celebrated by such a prestigious institution. Thank you to all staff for the hard work they put into this achievement, and to our fantastic children who are at the heart of everything we do at Gordon,” said Mrs Jones, our Headteacher.
Mrs Murphy, Director of Education for our Trust Hub said, “This is a wonderful achievement for the team at The Gordon Children’s Academy, who go above and beyond to support pupils and transform their life chances. We are honoured to be recognised across our Strood Hub by the University of Exeter for our efforts in developing our pupils into lifelong learners. As a Trust, we are proud of the unique cognitive approach we take to education, and truly believe it provides the best start in life for our children.”
